Player Fixes – How MU Online Players Can Stop Disconnects
If you are a MU Online player getting “connection lost”, “disconnected from server” or random DC while others stay online, start with these steps. They are simple, safe and fix most MU Online DC issues caused by home internet, PC settings or the client itself.
1. Quick Fixes for MU Online Players (Do These First)
- Restart your router and modem: Unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in, wait until it fully reconnects, then start MU Online again.
- Use a cable instead of Wi‑Fi: If possible, connect your PC or laptop with an Ethernet cable. Wi‑Fi packet loss is one of the most common MU Online DC causes.
- Close downloads and streams: Stop torrents, large downloads, Netflix, YouTube and other games while playing MU Online.
- Turn off VPN or “gaming booster” apps: Many VPN and “ping improvement” tools actually make MU Online less stable and cause DC.
- Restart your PC: A fresh restart clears stuck network drivers and background processes that may cause disconnects.
2. Fix Your Internet & Router Settings
Even if speed tests look good, small connectivity drops can disconnect MU Online. Try these steps:
- Move closer to the router if you must use Wi‑Fi, or use the 5 GHz band with a strong signal.
- Ask family/roommates to pause huge downloads while you are at events (CS, DS, IT, etc.).
- Update router firmware: Log into your router’s web interface and check for firmware updates from the manufacturer.
- Change DNS: Set DNS servers to something reliable like 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 in your network adapter settings.
- Disable router “smart QoS”/traffic shaping if it seems to slow games; some cheap routers mis-handle game traffic.
3. Fix Windows & Network Adapter Settings
Windows sometimes puts your network adapter into power saving or uses unstable drivers:
- Update network drivers: In Device Manager, update your Ethernet/Wi‑Fi adapter drivers or download the latest from the manufacturer’s website.
- Disable power saving:
- Open Device Manager → Network adapters → right‑click your adapter → Properties → Power Management.
- Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
- Use a High Performance power plan:
- Control Panel → Power Options → choose “High performance” (or “Ultimate performance” if available).
- Reset network stack (advanced but safe):
- Open cmd as Administrator and run:
- netsh winsock reset
- netsh int ip reset
- Restart your PC afterwards.

Using an old, mixed or modified client is a very common reason for disconnects on character selection, after warping, or when loading custom items, wings or pets.
- Always download the official client for the server you play on.
- Do not mix files from other MU servers or old versions.
- Fully extract the client (do not run it directly from the .zip or .rar).

6. Adjust In-Game Settings & Overlays
- Close overlays: Disable or close Discord overlay, Steam overlay, NVIDIA/AMD overlays, Xbox Game Bar and unnecessary screen recorders.
- Lower effects and resolution if your PC struggles; extremely low FPS can sometimes lead to freezes and DC.
- Use windowed or borderless mode if alt‑tabbing frequently causes problems.
- Disable cheat tools or macro software: Some auto clickers, macro tools or “hack” programs can cause forced DC or bans.

- Open Windows search → type cmd → Enter.
- Run:
- ping yourserverip -n 50
- tracert yourserverip
- Take screenshots or copy the results and send them to the admin. This helps them see if your route/ISP is the problem.
Server-Side Causes & Fixes for MU Online Private Servers
This part is for MU Online private server owners and admins. Even if you use a strong OVH dedicated server with 3 Gbps bandwidth, misconfiguration or routing problems can still cause disconnects for certain players, countries or peak times.
Why Some MU Online Players DC While Others Never Disconnect
It’s very common to see complaints like “I DC every 5 minutes” while others say “I can AFK all night”. This usually means your server is:
- Stable for most routes and ISPs
- But problematic for specific regions, unstable ISPs or aggressive security software
Typical mixed scenarios:
- Players close to the datacenter have low ping and almost no DC.
- Players far away (or behind weak ISPs) get random DC or can’t stay AFK long.
- Some players with strict antivirus/firewalls DC in busy maps, while others don’t.
Your goal as a server owner is to make the server as tolerant and stable as possible, while still protecting it from DDoS, floods and abuse.
Quick Checklist for MU Online Server Owners
Before going deep, confirm these basics:
- 1. CPU/RAM/disk OK? Monitor during peak hours:
- CPU ideally below ~70–80%
- RAM not constantly at 95–100%
- Disk on SSD/NVMe if possible, not slow HDD
- 2. All MU Online ports open? Verify in:
- Windows / Linux firewall
- OVH firewall / security group
- Any external firewall / DDoS panel you use
- 3. Anti‑DDoS not too strict? Relax very aggressive packet filters and test if DC improves.
- 4. Server files configured correctly? Check timeouts, flood settings and idle kick values in your files.
- 5. Logs reviewed? Look at ConnectServer and GameServer logs for patterns: timeouts, floods, same country/ISP, etc.
- 6. Official client enforced? Provide a clean, updated client and discourage mixed files.
- 7. Regular restarts scheduled? Restart GS/CS/DS during low population to clear memory leaks and stuck sessions.
Network Route, Ping and Distance
Every player reaches your server via multiple network hops. Packet loss or high latency on any of those hops will cause MU Online DC, even if your dedicated server is perfect.
What you can do:
- Ask DC‑heavy players for:
- ping yourserverip -n 50
- tracert yourserverip / traceroute yourserverip
- Check if all problematic players:
- Are from the same country or ISP, or
- Have high ping / packet loss from a specific hop.
- Choose an OVH datacenter closest to your main audience (e.g. EU, NA, Asia).
- For truly global player bases, consider multiple regions or proxy solutions for the future.
Firewall, Ports and Anti‑DDoS Configuration
MU Online uses multiple ports: ConnectServer, GameServer, JoinServer, DataServer, etc. If these are blocked or heavily filtered, players will see:
- DC when selecting character
- DC when changing maps or servers
- Random DC in busy maps when packet bursts happen
Checklist:
- Windows / Linux firewall: Explicitly allow all MU ports (usually TCP; some files also require UDP).
- OVH firewall:
- Allow MU ports in the OVH control panel.
- Avoid very low rate limits that block normal game traffic.
- Anti‑DDoS/Game profiles:
- Use a game‑friendly profile with reasonable packet and connection limits.
- Do not block entire continents unless your server is truly region‑locked.
When hunting for DC causes, temporarily relax strict rules during low player times. If DC improves, you know that your protection was too aggressive.
Server Performance – CPU, RAM & Disk I/O
Even if bandwidth is large, an overloaded system can cause lag spikes and disconnects. Common hidden problems:
- Backups running in the middle of peak hours
- Antivirus doing full scans while players are online
- Running website, databases and multiple game servers on the same weak machine
Optimisation tips:
- Use SSD or NVMe for your MU files and SQL database.
- Schedule backups and AV scans when almost no players are online.
- Consider moving the website to a separate VPS or hosting for large servers.
- Keep an eye on I/O wait and disk queue length; high values can indirectly cause DC.
Database, SQL Server and Remote Connections
If your MU Online database (usually MSSQL) is on another machine or VPS, a slow or unstable DB connection can cause delays and disconnects.
- Whenever possible, host SQL on the same machine as MU or in the same LAN, not over the public internet.
- Monitor SQL performance: check CPU, RAM and open connections on the DB server.
- Ensure firewall rules between game server and DB server are stable and not inspected by heavy DPI or IPS.
MU Server Files – Timeouts, Flood & Idle Kick
Most modern MU server files include safety checks against floods and bad clients. Misconfigured, they can kick legit players with small packet loss.
- Locate timeout and flood settings in your file configs (ConnectServer, GameServer, etc.).
- Do not set extremely low packet or timeout values; give unstable ISPs some breathing room.
- Enable extra logging if available to see whether a DC was caused by “flood”, “timeout” or another rule.
- Adjust one or two parameters at a time and observe for at least 24–48 hours.
Operating System & Network Card Tuning
On both Windows Server and Linux you can do a few small tweaks:
- Power plan: Use “High performance”; disable deep sleep / power saving for the NIC.
- Advanced NIC settings:
- Disable exotic “Green Ethernet”/energy options.
- If you suspect compatibility problems, try disabling Large Send Offload (LSO) or similar offload features and test.
- Time synchronisation: Keep the server clock in sync (NTP). Some licence / anticheat and SQL setups depend on correct time.
- Background apps: Avoid running heavy torrent clients, browsers, or other game servers on the same machine during peaks.
Optimising an OVH Dedicated Server for MU Online
An OVH dedicated server with 3 Gbps bandwidth is more than enough for MU Online. What really matters is latency, routing, hardware and clean configuration.
For OVH specifically:
- Pick the best datacenter: Choose the OVH region closest to your primary audience.
- Use OVH Game anti‑DDoS: Select a profile optimised for online games, not generic web traffic.
- Review bandwidth graphs: Check OVH graphs around the time of reported DC to spot spikes or attacks.
- Separate roles if needed: For big servers, use one machine for MU, another for web, and possibly a separate SQL instance.
- Keep the OS lean: Install only what your MU server needs; avoid unnecessary roles or bloated software.
When moving to a new OVH machine, try to keep:
- Same or compatible OS version (properly tested with your MU files)
- Updated firewalls and ports for all MU services
- Equal or better CPU, RAM and storage performance
How to Test, Monitor and Pinpoint MU Online DC Issues
To fix disconnects permanently, treat them as a small investigation. Gather data, then change one thing at a time.
1. Track When and Where DC Happens
- Log dates and exact times when many players report DC or “connection lost”.
- Check if DC is:
- Global or only from specific countries / ISPs
- Related to certain maps (Lorencia, Noria, custom maps) or events
- Mostly at peak hours or completely random
2. Check MU Logs and System Logs
- MU logs: Look for patterns of flood, timeout, and session closure messages.
- System logs:
- Windows: Event Viewer (System & Application logs)
- Linux: syslog / journalctl for network, disk or kernel errors
3. Compare with Host / OVH Network Graphs
In your hosting or OVH panel:
- Check the time window where DC happened and see if there were:
- Large sudden spikes in incoming/outgoing traffic (possible DDoS)
- Unusual patterns (flat then sharp spikes, repeated bursts)
- If graphs look stable, focus more on routing, ISP issues and your server configuration.
4. Change One Thing at a Time
Avoid making 10 changes at once. If the problem disappears, you won’t know why. Use this approach:
- Adjust one setting (for example, increase timeout or relax packet rate limit).
- Monitor for 24–48 hours of normal gameplay.
- If DC improves, keep that change and optionally fine‑tune further.
- If nothing changes, revert and test another parameter.
